Automatic Litter Boxes and Tofu Litter: What the Specifications Actually Decide

Two questions come up about automatic litter boxes, and the internet answers neither of them well.

The first is whether they are dangerous. The second is whether the litter you already use will actually work in one.

We sell an automatic litter box and we sell tofu litter, so you should read everything below with that in mind. What we can do is show you the specifications, the failure modes that have been documented, and the two numbers that decide whether a litter and a machine get along. Where we do not know something about our own product, we say so — and there is one of those below that matters more than anything else on this page.


1. What has actually gone wrong

The safety reporting on automatic litter boxes points at one design, not at the whole category.

The dangerous pattern is a drum that rotates on a horizontal axis. As the drum turns to sift the waste, the entrance rotates away and the opening closes completely. If the sensor has not registered that a cat is inside, the cat is inside a sealed rotating chamber. That is the design behind the incidents that owners have reported, across a set of generic units sold under several names.

The advice that consistently follows from that reporting is short: prefer an open-top design that cannot fully enclose a cat, and avoid the generic rotating-drum units.

Our box is open-top. That is a structural fact about its shape rather than a promise about its behaviour, which is why we are willing to state it plainly. A machine with no door cannot shut a cat in. It can still pinch, still move, still fail — an open top removes one specific failure mode and does not remove the rest.

We are not going to write the sentence "our litter box is safe." No seller can honestly write that sentence about a machine with a motor in it.


2. The sensors, and the thing we do not know about our own box

Every automatic box depends on knowing whether a cat is present. Three sensor families do that job, and each fails differently.

Infrared. A beam across the opening. Cheap, and it degrades: litter dust settles on the lens, and airborne particles scatter the beam. Teardown reporting describes single-point IR photodiodes caked in litter dust within a year of use.

Weight sensing. Load cells under the tray detect the cat's weight. The failure here is the one that matters most, and we will come back to it.

Radar or time-of-flight. Distance mapping rather than a single beam. More robust to dust and to coat colour, and more expensive.

Our box is listed with six detection systems — infrared, radar, gravity, overload, anti-tip and obstacle detection. Redundancy of that kind is the right architecture, because it means no single dirty lens decides whether the machine moves.

Now the part we cannot tell you.

Weight-sensing systems are calibrated to a minimum. Reporting on the category puts typical thresholds at around 2.5 to 3 pounds — roughly 1.1 to 1.4 kg. Below the threshold, the cat does not register. A kitten of one kilogram can be sitting in the tray while the machine reads an empty box.

We do not know the minimum detection weight of the box we sell. It is not in the specification we were given, we have not measured it, and we have asked our supplier for the figure. Until we have it in writing, here is our position, and we would rather lose the sale than soften it:

Do not leave a kitten unsupervised with any automatic litter box, ours included, until you know that machine's minimum detection weight and you know your kitten is above it. A kitten under about 1.5 kg should be using an ordinary tray.

Our own product page currently says the open-top design suits "all cat sizes." That line was written about the entrance, not the sensor, but it reads as broader than we can support. We are changing it, and we are telling you here rather than editing quietly.


3. Where dust stops being a comfort question

Litter dust is usually discussed as an air-quality issue — your lungs, your cat's lungs, the film on the skirting board. In an automatic box it becomes a mechanical one.

Dust settles on infrared lenses. A fouled lens is a sensor that has quietly stopped doing its job, and nothing on the machine tells you it has happened.

This is the one place where our litter's measured figures connect to the machine rather than to the room. Our tofu litter measured 0.66% powder content and a 0.36% pulverisation rate under T/CIQA 11-2020, published in full with the laboratory's report number. Against that standard's three bands, 0.66% is first grade rather than premium, and we have said so on the report page.

Lower dust means less material available to settle on a lens. It does not mean the sensors will not foul. Every litter produces some dust, ours included — 0.66% is not zero, and we have never printed the words dust-free. Clean the sensor windows on a schedule regardless of which litter you use.


4. Does tofu litter work in an automatic box? The number is pellet size

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is: it depends on a specification most tofu litter never prints.

An automatic box sifts by dropping clean litter through a grate and carrying the clumps to the bin. That grate has fixed holes. Everything follows from whether your litter fits through them.

Most tofu litter is made as sticks around 3 mm across. Neakasa, which manufactures automatic boxes, states plainly that standard tofu sticks at that size get lodged tightly inside the small grate holes, and that the machine then treats clean, long pellets as waste and dumps them into the bin. You pay for litter and the machine throws it away.

Their stated recommendation for automatic boxes is 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm crushed tofu litter.

Our tofu litter is 1.5 mm.

That is the whole reason it behaves in an automatic box, and it is worth being precise about what kind of claim that is. It is not a claim that our litter is better litter. It is a claim that its pellet size sits inside the range the machine manufacturers themselves specify, while the common 3 mm stick format does not. You can check that number on our pack, and you can check theirs on theirs.

If you are buying tofu litter for an automatic box from anyone — us or otherwise — the pellet size is the specification to look for, and a brand that does not print it has not answered the question.


5. Clump time versus cycle delay

The second objection to tofu in an automatic box is that it clumps more slowly than clay. That is true, and it is a design consequence rather than a defect: our litter clumps through starch and guar gum rather than sodium bentonite, and it takes about 10 to 20 seconds to form.

People then assume the machine will sift a clump that has not set, and smear it across the grate. That can happen. It is also entirely avoidable, because of the mismatch in the numbers.

The clump takes seconds. The delay is set in minutes. Neakasa's guidance for tofu litter is to set the cycle timer to at least 10 to 15 minutes after the cat leaves. Ten minutes is thirty to sixty times longer than the clump needs.

Two practical settings follow, and both matter more than the brand of litter:

Set the delay to 10–15 minutes, not to the shortest option. The short setting exists to make the box look responsive in a showroom.

Fill deeper than you think — 5 cm or more. Tofu litter has no synthetic binder, so a thin layer lets urine reach the tray floor and stick there. A stuck clump is what actually jams a sifting mechanism, far more often than a soft one.

Our measured clump strength is 94.1% against a 75% minimum. In a manual tray that is the difference between lifting a clump out whole and having it crumble in the scoop. In an automatic box it is the difference between a clump surviving the trip to the bin and disintegrating on the way.


6. Recalibrate after you switch

Tofu litter and clay litter have different densities, so the same tray volume weighs a different amount. Machines that use load cells to sense litter level or cat presence are calibrated against that weight.

Recalibrate the litter-level sensor after changing litter type. Not doing so is a common cause of a box that reports the wrong fill level, or cycles at the wrong moment, and it gets blamed on the litter.

One more placement note that comes out of the same sensor physics: load cells drift on soft or uneven ground. Put the box on a hard, level floor. Not on a rug, not wedged against a wall.


7. The "15 days" number, and what it assumes

Our own listing says the 15-litre bin gives up to about 15 days hands-free. That figure is worth unpacking rather than repeating.

It describes one cat. Two cats roughly halve it. A cat with loose stools, or one on a wet-food diet producing larger urine clumps, will fill the bin faster than a cat on dry food. Nothing about 15 litres changes; what changes is how fast it fills.

The tray in our box measures 38.5 × 44 cm. Filled to the 5 cm depth we recommend, that is about 8.5 litres of litter for the first fill — geometry, not a marketing figure, and you can multiply it yourself.

We would like to tell you how many of our 2.1 kg packs that comes to, and we cannot, because we have not measured the bulk density of our own litter. It is a simple measurement and we should have it. We will publish it when we do.


What we have not done

This section is the reason the rest of the page is worth reading.

  • We have not tested our litter in our own box under any protocol. What we have is that the people who run this shop use the combination at home and find it works. That is an opinion held by people with an obvious interest, and it is not evidence. We have not run a set number of cycles, counted jams, or weighed how much clean litter ended up in the waste bin.
  • We do not know the box's minimum cat detection weight. Stated above, repeated here, because it is the one gap on this page that could matter to an animal rather than to a wallet.
  • We have not measured our litter's bulk density, so we cannot convert the tray volume into packs.
  • The sensor teardown detail above comes from third-party reporting, not from our own inspection. We have not opened our box to identify which sensors and which components are inside it. We have asked.
  • Our product page overstated the fit. "All cat sizes" describes the opening, not the detection threshold, and we are correcting it.

We publish this list for the same reason we publish 0.66% instead of writing "low dust": a specification you cannot check is a decoration, and an omission you are not told about is worse than a weakness you are.


A short checklist before you buy any automatic box

Is it open-top, or is it a drum that closes? This is the first question, not the last.

What is the minimum detection weight? If the seller cannot tell you, that is your answer about the seller. If you have a kitten, this decides whether you buy at all.

What pellet size does your litter use? 1.5–2.0 mm for tofu in an automatic box. 3 mm sticks jam grates.

Can you set the cycle delay to 10–15 minutes? A box with only a short fixed delay is a box that will fight a plant-based litter.

How will you clean the sensors, and how often? Every litter fouls a lens eventually.

And one that has nothing to do with machinery: some cats will not use one. A motor that moves in a place a cat has decided is private is a real reason for a cat to stop using the box, and a cat avoiding the litter tray is a health problem before it is a furniture problem. If your cat stops using the box after you install one, take the machine out and go back to a tray, then talk to your vet if the avoidance continues.

Frequently asked questions

Are automatic litter boxes dangerous for cats? The documented incidents cluster around one design: a drum that rotates on a horizontal axis so the entrance closes completely during the cycle. If the sensor misses a cat, the cat is enclosed. Open-top designs cannot close in that way, which is why the safety advice consistently points to them. No automatic box is risk-free, and a kitten below the machine's minimum detection weight is the case to be most careful about.

Can kittens use an automatic litter box? Only once you know the machine's minimum detection weight and know your kitten exceeds it. Weight-sensing systems are commonly calibrated to around 1.1–1.4 kg, and a kitten lighter than that may not register at all. Until you have that figure from the manufacturer, use an ordinary tray.

Can you use tofu litter in an automatic litter box? Yes, if the pellet size fits the sifting grate. Standard tofu sticks around 3 mm jam the holes and get dumped into the waste bin as though they were clumps. Automatic box manufacturers recommend 1.5–2.0 mm crushed tofu litter. Kopipets tofu litter is 1.5 mm.

Does tofu litter clump too slowly for a self-cleaning box? No, provided the cycle delay is set properly. Kopipets tofu litter clumps in about 10 to 20 seconds, while the recommended delay for plant-based litter is 10 to 15 minutes after the cat leaves. The mismatch is enormous in your favour. Problems come from short delay settings and from filling too shallow, not from clump speed itself.
