⚠️ Kittens: read this before you buy

Automatic litter boxes detect the cat partly by weight, and weight sensors are calibrated to a minimum. Across the category those thresholds are commonly around 1.1–1.4 kg. A kitten lighter than the threshold may not register at all.

We do not yet know the minimum detection weight of this box. It is not in the specification we were given, we have not measured it, and we have asked our manufacturer for the figure in writing. We will publish it here when we have it.

Until then: do not leave a kitten unsupervised with this box, or with any automatic box, until you know that machine's minimum detection weight and know your kitten is above it. A kitten under about 1.5 kg should be using an ordinary tray. We would rather lose the sale than leave that unsaid.

We previously described the open-top design as suiting "all cat sizes." That was written about the entrance rather than the sensor, it read as broader than we can support, and we have changed it.

🔬 On litter: pellet size is the specification that matters

A self-cleaning box sifts by dropping clean litter through a fixed grate. Standard tofu litter is usually made as sticks around 3 mm across, and box manufacturers report that these lodge in the grate holes — the machine then treats clean pellets as waste and dumps them into the bin. The size range recommended for automatic boxes is 1.5–2.0 mm.

Our tofu litter is 1.5 mm, with measured clump strength of 94.1% and powder content of 0.66%. Set the cycle delay to 10–15 minutes, fill to at least 5 cm, and recalibrate the litter-level sensor after changing litter type.
